As I scroll through old photos of things that catch my eye, I notice a lot of images of roads, painted streets with lines and arrows. These shapes that we see everyday, that guide us though to safety, I often find myself staring at in admiration at stoplights. Painted curbs against raw concrete. Concrete walls meeting a grassy field. And I love the poured tube bases of parking lot lights, the spiral of the cardboard mold that created its permanent beauty. I think this piece conjured up some of that appreciation. There was a lot of doing and un-doing, covering and uncovering, applying and scratching away. I like balancing organic textures within awkward structured shapes.
